Starting a new page in life, such as going to university, is always intimidating. What should I expect? Will I make any friends? What my student life will be like? Don’t worry, everyone asks themselves these questions; and we are here to help you start your TRU adventure by introducing you to one of the TRU’s largest student organizations, LEAP, which stands for Leisure Explore Activity Program.
We are both international students (from different countries), and just like you, but 3 years ago, came to TRU. We didn’t know anyone and were absolutely confused about what the future held for us. Then, we heard about LEAP (it was called ISAP back then, but we will tell you all about that later), and all the amazing events and activities it organizes for us, students. Since then, we have always been keen on joining LEAP in their events and never had any regrets! We made a lot of friends and even had some of the best times of our lives.
Just this weekend, I (Li) went to Sun Peaks, an outstanding ski resort near Kamloops, with LEAP. It was my first time skiing and I had a lot of fun. We were gathering on campus, which is very convenient for students. While we were waiting for everyone to arrive, we received snacks and lunch tickets. In the bus, everyone was talking to each other, playing games, and taking group selfies. It reminded me of going on a trip with my class back in high school. When we arrived to Sun Peaks, I went to the “slow zone” for beginners and started my first skiing adventure. Because I was so clumsy and unskilful, a nice man came to me and showed me some basic skiing skills. Despite the efforts of the man to teach me, when I tried to ski down the hill, all I could do was rolling down like a snowball. I certainly looked ridiculous and foolish, but I still had a good time.
Just a few days ago, we had a pleasure of chatting with a LEAP coordinator and event organizer, Jillian Folk. She loves working with international students. For her, it is sort of travelling without having to leave Kamloops and her favourite job. Jillian told us some interesting facts about LEAP, and we cannot wait to share them with you.
So, up until 2016, LEAP was actually called ISAP (International Student Activity Program). The reason for changing the name was to reflect the university’s philosophy of being a global community. It is important for LEAP to be a place where Canadians can work and interact with international students, and where a constant exchange of cultures, ideas, and thoughts takes place. Surprisingly, even though the previous name ISAP clearly stated that the organization was for international students only, Jillian assured us that it has always been open to Canadian students as well. Now, with a new name and slightly changed direction, LEAP is experiencing a significant growth of Canadian students.
Apart from being fun and great for making friends, LEAP activities are also very affordable, which makes them a perfect deal for students! Now, you must be wondering where you can look them up. Well, LEAP has an active Facebook page where they post pictures from their events, inform you of upcoming ones, and share some interesting and useful links. Check it out! If you prefer to talk to Jillian and her assistants in person, you can find them in International Building (first floor). Note, they work Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 10 am to 2 pm.
LEAP and other student organizations at TRU do everything possible to help you make your student life even more fun, interesting, and adventurous. As Jillian said, “When you [students] get out in the world, you know everything is possible. You can do anything with your lives.” Remember that and never doubt your abilities.
Welcome to TRU!
