Studying at a new place can often feel daunting and strange at first, so here are a few special places at TRU that will help to make the campus feel like home.
COMMON GROUNDS
If you’re like many other university students, chances are you also run on coffee to survive a hectic school life. At TRU Common Grounds is the perfect place for students to find a great cup of coffee, hide out and study, or catch up with friends and classmates. Housed in the Campus Activity Centre this student owned and operated coffee shop offers fair trade organic coffee in environmentally friendly cups, and the comfy seats bathed in light will make you feel right at home while supporting local business.
THE DEN
The Thompson Rivers University Den is the University Pub located on campus in the Campus Activity Centre. With a fresh new look, name, appy hour specials and fun contests, The Den is a great place to grab a drink with your friends after class and meet other students that go to TRU. The food is great, and the staff is friendly, creating a true Canadian pub atmosphere. They even offer to be the host for your next event and can accommodate up to 220 people. So if you’re an event planner, The Den is a perfect place to host a smaller, intimate event.
OLD MAIN ARCHITECTURE
Students are encouraged to get outside and explore their surroundings by taking a walk to the heart of the campus to admire the innovative architecture of Old Main. With recent renovations, which were inspired by a Group of Seven Painting by A. Y. Jackson of Mount Paul, the building now mirrors its beautiful Kamloops landscape. The building is home to the new faculty of law, as well as student street, the TRU art gallery, coffee shops, and study spots, where students can find inspiration, collaborate with peers and hang out with friends.
THE LIBRARY
TRU has two library locations on campus, one being the Main library located between the culinary arts building and the clock tower building; the second location is a little smaller than the first, and it’s on the second floor of the House of Learning building. The library in the HOL building is more appealing to us. When you get up there the windows are floor to ceiling which gives you a great view of the common grounds. There are long wooden tables with matching chairs that are perfect for spreading out and getting to work. There are many comfy chairs available for easy reading, and a beautiful display of First Nations Culture. It’s a great place to relax and focus on your studies.
These are just a few examples of cozy spots and things to do on campus where new students can feel more at home in an unfamiliar place.
